Dollhouse – the flipside

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 | Nick, TV, geekdom

Sophie’s been posting a bit on why she’s excited about Dollhouse. here’s why I’m not:

  1. It’s on Fox. Remember Firefly?
  2. It’s on the same Friday night slot that killed Firefly.
  3. It had a pilot do over.
  4. Eliza Dushku needs to learn that being hot is no substitute for dramatic range.
  5. It’s kind of a silly premise.

I’ll still be downloading watching it, but I’m keen to get a few episodes down before I officially get excited. For the record I thought Firefly was a stupid idea. Actually I still think it’s a stupid idea but somehow it was a stupid idea that worked. Let’s hope Dollhouse works just as well, plus survives Fox’s axe.

All good points. Though I’m going to risk responding to them any way, in the interest of debate.

1/ They did, which I’m sure burnt Joss Whedon more than most. Maybe he knows something we don’t? Or he’s a chump, but I’m leaning towards the former.

2/ Yep it is, but it seems they are making a double feature with the Sarah Connor Chronicles. Two shows a bigger draw card make.

3/ Sure, but the episode that was the pilot is still being used, I think as episode 2, but I’d have to go find where I saw that.

4/ I can’t really think of a reply to this, except she might have hidden depth? Sarah Michelle Geller certainly showed that she did.

5/ Yeah, but so is a cheerleader who kills vampires. That one worked out pretty well, so I think sometimes it isn’t just the idea, it’s the execution that’s important.

On 4) What? In Scooby Doo?
On 5) As the Entertainment Weekly review points out (http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20256831,00.html) I’m not sure what the metaphor here is that will make this move beyond it’s premise… although I’m dubious that the apparent metaphor of Firefly (broken nuclear family) is what made that one work.

On 4/ No, on Buffy. A lot of that is obviously the writing but you can’t deny that there were some damn powerful moments from Ms. Geller in that show.
