Due to issues with hosting I’ve decided to go cheap and just use the freely hosted version of WordPress over at wordpress.com.

Therefore this blog now lives at: http://mostlygeeknz.wordpress.com/

Please update your links.

I’m still trying to get a game together over here so I don’t have any RPG writing to do, but in the meantime – here’s some links!

In other nerdy news, I now have an HD TV and boy does my 360 look good!

Comics and the movie biz

Monday, August 17th, 2009 | RPG, comics, games, geekdom, movies, music | 2 Comments

On a plane yesterday I watched the really, really terrible Wolverine movie. I mean the worst comic movie I’ve seen in years – like comic movies used to be. That said it reminded me how there are some pretty cool things about Wolverine as a character.

But what to buy if I wanted to get into Wolverine? This link is all about how the comics business interacts and fails to win from successful movie tie-ins. And a key reason is a lack of obvious starting points for characters – especially characters that have been going since before I was even born. This is similar to the complaints that are made about the lack of a good introductory RPG – attempts Chris Pramas and Green Ronin are trying to solve with their Dragon Age RPG.

I don’t have the time or inclination to get seriously into superhero comics, especially big name ones from the big two publishers, so I’m glad the films like Iron Man, the first 2 X-Men and Spiderman movies and the recent Batman movies are getting made – they allow me to get my big super hero fix without spending wads of cash on comics of variable-quality comics. I just hope that they re better than Wolverine

Rock Band – or how I was proven wrong

Thursday, April 30th, 2009 | Console, Sophie, blogging, games, geekdom, music | Comments Off

rock-band-quiet-drumsSome months ago, on one of my regular gaming nights, the GM never showed. After sitting around for awhile it was suggested that we play a little Rock Band. To say I was skeptical would be an understatement. However not wanting to be the Grouch in this particular group I decided to take up the drums and see what this whole Rock Band thing was about.

Up until this point my only experience with this kind of game was being woken by druken singing by some ex-flat mate’s and another of my ex-flat mate’s attempts to sing in tune to Singstar. Suffice to say that these off key attempts (if any of said ex-flat mate is reading this, no offence!) didn’t give me warm fuzzy feelings towards the idea of thses games.

Any way as I was saying, I sat down at the drums and while the first couple of songs weren’t overly skillful they certainly were fun. I’m now a little hooked and any chance I get (usually after bugging friends who actually own the game when regular gaming doesn’t quite happen) I pull out those colourful drums and pretend I’m some highly skilled rocker chick. The delusion is half the fun I think.
