Dollhouse
Episode 1 of Dollhouse
So after all the pre-buzz stuff I’ve written here I thought I should give my first impressions of the show. I won’t go into the background or the premise of the show, that’s covered pretty well in other places, such as this good review over at Salon but I will touch briefly on my impressions of the first episode.
I sat down to watch this quite excited. It’s a show with a premise that I think is cool and created by someone who’s work I’ve pretty much always loved. But I have to say that the first 15 minutes or so didn’t grab me. I felt the way the scenes flowed was jarring and like they were trying to cram as much info in as they could into a short space of time.
But I stuck with it and once we got through the “set up and explain stuff” portion of the episode and got into the guts of it all it was great. And I was surprised by Eliza Duchku, while I won’t go so far as to say her performance blew me away I will say that she seemed to have more range than I would have attributed to her.
The vague creepiness of the premise, coupled with the way the actors swtich between their “engaged” and “unengaged” selves is really quite cool. I’m not 100% sold on Dollhouse yet, but I will be watching more of it to see where it takes me.
Dollhouse – the flipside
Sophie’s been posting a bit on why she’s excited about Dollhouse. here’s why I’m not:
- It’s on Fox. Remember Firefly?
- It’s on the same Friday night slot that killed Firefly.
- It had a pilot do over.
- Eliza Dushku needs to learn that being hot is no substitute for dramatic range.
- It’s kind of a silly premise.
I’ll still be downloading watching it, but I’m keen to get a few episodes down before I officially get excited. For the record I thought Firefly was a stupid idea. Actually I still think it’s a stupid idea but somehow it was a stupid idea that worked. Let’s hope Dollhouse works just as well, plus survives Fox’s axe.
More Dollhouse buzz
It seems that a lot of marketing is going into Dollhouse’s launch next week. There is quite a good interview with Eliza Dushku over at the LA Times.
I have to say that the more I read about it (and I’m trying not to do too much) the more I think this might stick around. After all they’re already filmed 13 episodes. Fingers crossed.
Dollhouse!!
In a couple of weeks Joss Whedon’s (the Buffy, Angel, Firefly guy) new show Dollhouse is starting. I’ve been pretty excited about this since I first heard of it, in part due to being a Whedon fan girl and also due to having a rather large crush on the lead actress Eliza Dushku (Faith from Buffy). So expect o have a few blog post dedicated to it. You have been warned.
Here is a bit of background:
